Anything that is not explicitly pro-Trump is now terrorism.

This is the future that is unfolding and yet there is an alarming number of people who are still being dismissive.

It is not that plain, and it is not limited to the USA.

Edit:

> alarming number of people who are still being dismissive

The "alarming number" of dead people in practical terms here is probably ~99.9995% - if one checks indirect signals.

> Anything that is not explicitly pro-Trump is now terrorism.

They should close instagram (at least half of it) then

Trump's idol Putin has a similar mental shortcut: those who dare to oppose "Russian World" are Nazis.
This seems to be a continuation of what has been going on for decades. Obama was far less heavy handed with his method of stating his disdain for services like this but he wanted any communication platform to be readable to the US government, hence the illegal citizen spying program.

We as a group of techy citizens need to keep building applications like this, whatever the designation it gives us.

> violent

The mentioned entity is making accusations: the point could be that an authoritative institutional judgement is missing (at list in the article) to establish a responsibility.

In fact, the target's rebuttal was «false allegations made by a politically desperate administration with the sole intention of swaying people and media attention away from their own violence and warmongering».

> our civilization

The mentioned entity is making boasting statements: again more justifications should be provided in order to make the stated less perplexing.

(Corrige: 'at list' → 'at least')
This sets the precedence that any entity providing encrypted services who refuses to provide US backdoors can be hit with a terrorist designation, anyone using them becomes criminalized by association. Even Apple would now have to kowtow or face the emperor's wrath.

In 2030: "You have DeltaChat installed on your GrapheneOS phone? Why would you use that unless you're a terrorist? Good citizens use government-blessed choices, like Signal and iPhone once they passed the Freedom2029 compliance mandate."

> who refused to provide US backdoors

It is clearly not just that, pls see the article and the allegation.

> Why would you use that unless you're a terrorist?

It is already like this: "why would you want privacy, what do you have to hide?" is often repeated.

Just think of the push towards cashless, in some areas cash is considered antisocial: I have seen fools that should be humble frown in front of it, silently screaming that "every good citizen sends his practices to the twelve largely anonymous private-public data collectors established by european law (and through monetic from the USA)" - the manipulation of the ignorant, in which vilty becomes pride...

> like Signal

Is xeonmc the only person in this world, aside from me, that is extremely suspicious of walled garden applications like Signal, regardless of how open their source is?

Well, I'd expect any person or organization in such a position, to be on the receiving end of the proverbial rubber hose, before too long.
Fwiw, the FBI use Signal regularly, and it's approved for some specific use cases. Don't ask how I know ;)

There are ways to ascertain how and when a person is using their device by analyzing Signal's metadata, then build a predictive model based on months of daily usage to infer when they're most likely about to pick up their phone.

Delta Chat is years behind Signal's protections, and its claims of "zero metadata" are straight up lies. SimpleX has at least four remote execution zero days that I'm aware of, all relating to media processing. I told Evgeny to make the blur effect actually hash the image instead of acting like an overlay, but I was repeatedly ignored before being set as an "observer" role in the SimpleX Public Group.

On the individual side of things, we see people that cross a red line getting all their cloud and social media accounts nuked on the same day. That's been the case for a long time.
The outstanding thing about these sanctions is that there's no due process: the accuser is the jury and judge. You don't need to be found guilty, or even charged to be sanction. The impact is deep, and global.

Each of these sanctions is sending a really strong signal to the world: "stop relying on anything US".

That's just American culture no? Americans hate discussions, meetings and deliberations. They want a strong leader telling everyone what to do and then everyone jumps up to do it.

The US technically has a parliament but it's function is largely ceremonial.

> Each of these sanctions is sending a really strong signal to the world: "stop relying on anything US".

Funny that this thing happened _only_ after Trump came to power. US has been doing such things from some time but nobody noticed it. Nowadays it is even exporting this.

One of the things that becomes apparent if you look at GDP relative to political upheaval in various countries is that stability matters more than any given political direction for the economy. That's not to say specific policies do not matter, but they matter much less than I wish they did.

I don't know if the upheaval Trump is causing is sufficient in scale that it will be visible in US growth rates.

But the point is that business will adapt to pretty much any regime to various degrees if it is predictable. The US used to be predictable. Now it's increasingly looking unpredictable, and that could potentially become a much bigger problem than any specific policy Trump puts in place.

(For an extreme example, compare China under Mao and under Deng: Both periods saw lots of year on year growth, but under Mao there were cataclysmic resets whenever there were political upheaval before rapid growth eventually resumed and those resets massively harmed the long term growth average; more than Deng's economic reforms, the biggest change was a long period of predictability)

> I don't know if the upheaval Trump is causing is sufficient in scale that it will be visible in US growth rates.

The problem is the lag. It allows for the responsible party to escape ownership of creating the problem. And of course the responsible party’s party will just finger point at the other party and say “they did this to you!!”

Yes, and once the effect is visible it is likely to take many years to undo. Destroyed trust is not easily rebuilt.
.. people do not "rely" on US, people are afraid of US.. the big dimwit with a club
Report when the EUSSR will be doing the same. Oh, wait...
