Zed: Edit predictions are leaving the free Personal plan on October 7

news.ycombinator.com · Read Story HN original

Just got an email saying this:

> On October 7, 2026, edit predictions will no longer be included with Zed’s free Personal plan. They will remain available on the Pro, Student, and Business plans.

> Edit predictions require ongoing inference infrastructure, so we’re moving them to plans that support those costs.

> You’re receiving this email because you’ve recently used edit predictions on the Personal plan. If you want to continue using predictions after October 7, you can:

> Upgrade to Pro

> Self-host Zeta 2.1 (see our docs)

> Use one of the third-party providers we support

> Otherwise, no action is required.

Zeta 2.1 is an 8b model, at 4Q surely it can fit on/work on most computers in the last 10 years??
No big deal, I pay for zed plus/pro/max, whatever the subscription is called. I don’t miss any of the paid AI features when I switch laptops and can’t be bothered to login.

It’s a good editor, but the AI features are forgettable, and probably a distraction away from the core value proposition. They should sell commercial licenses like IntelliJ and be done with this AI monetization dilemma.
