THE SIMPLE MATH

How gas cost is calculated

A few numbers are all it takes to plan a little better.

01 / 03

01

The formula

Divide your trip distance by your vehicle’s fuel economy to find gallons needed. Multiply by the price per gallon to get your fuel cost.

`Distance ÷ MPG × gas price = fuel cost`

To find your own MPG, divide miles driven by gallons used.

02

Miles per gallon vs litres per 100 km

MPG measures how far a gallon takes you. L/100 km measures how much fuel you use over 100 kilometres. Switch units in the calculator to use either.

One way or round trip

Choose a round trip to double the distance. The number of people stays the same.

Cost per mile and cost per person

Once you know the fuel cost, divide it by miles to see what each mile costs, or divide the shared amount by everyone in the car. For regular driving, plan ahead with a monthly fuel budget or see how to split gas money.

Gas calculator or fuel cost calculator — which do you need?

Both names describe the same calculation: distance divided by fuel economy, multiplied by fuel price. If you also want to account for parking and other expenses, use the trip cost calculator.

THE DETAILS

Frequently asked questions

How much gas do I need for a 500 mile trip?

Divide 500 miles by your vehicle’s MPG. At 25 MPG you need 20 gallons; at 30 MPG, 16.7 gallons; and at 35 MPG, 14.3 gallons. Using the U.S. regular gasoline average of $4.27 per gallon (2026-10-26), those amounts cost about $85.40, $71.17 and $61.00 respectively.

How do I calculate gas cost per mile?

Divide the price per gallon by miles per gallon. Using the U.S. regular gasoline average of $4.27 per gallon (2026-10-26) and 28 MPG, fuel costs about $0.15 per mile. Maintenance, tires, insurance and depreciation increase the full cost of driving beyond fuel alone.

How much does a 1,000 mile road trip cost in gas?

Using the U.S. regular gasoline average of $4.27 per gallon (2026-10-26), a 1,000-mile drive costs about $170.80 at 25 MPG, $142.33 at 30 MPG, or $122.00 at 35 MPG. At 30 MPG, you will use approximately 33.3 gallons. Your actual result depends on your vehicle and route.

Does this work with litres and kilometres?

Yes. Switch to metric units to enter distance in kilometres and fuel economy in litres per 100 kilometres. US MPG and L/100 km measure the same thing in opposite directions: a higher MPG is better, while a lower L/100 km is better.

What MPG should I use?

Start with the EPA combined rating on your window sticker, or calculate your own by dividing miles driven by gallons used at your last fill-up. You can enter a custom figure here. Highway and city efficiency can differ considerably with the vehicle and driving conditions.

Does it include tolls and parking?

Fuel is calculated automatically. Add a known toll or parking amount in the optional adjustments to include it in the per-person and per-mile figures. If toll information is unavailable, we say “Tolls not included” rather than assume a free route.

How do I split gas money between passengers?

Divide the amount to be shared by the number of people, including the driver. The default of 2 means one driver and one passenger. For a dedicated per-person estimate, use the gas money calculator.

What is a good monthly gas budget?

Multiply weekly miles by 4.33, divide by MPG, then multiply by the gas price. For 250 miles a week and 28 MPG, using the U.S. regular gasoline average of $4.27 per gallon (2026-10-26), the estimate is about $165.08 a month. Your commute and weekend driving can change that amount.
