Ending support for R in Kaggle Notebooks | Kaggle

In the coming days, we will stop supporting R in Kaggle Notebooks. This post explains why and what it means for your work.

Why we're doing this

R has been part of Kaggle Notebooks (back when they were called Scripts) since 2015, and the R community has written some of the most-loved notebooks on the site. Over the past few years, though, usage has fallen sharply.

Keeping an R environment secure and up to date takes ongoing work, and our R image has fallen well behind. Rather than offer an environment we can't maintain properly, we've decided to retire it and put that effort into the Python environment that almost 100% of sessions use.

What's changing

- You will no longer be able to create new R or RMarkdown notebooks, or switch an existing notebook's language to R.

- **Existing R notebooks:** You can still view an R notebook with their code and outputs, but they can no longer be run, edited or forked.

- **Learn:** the R Guide will be removed.

- **Competitions:** Code competitions no longer accept R notebook submissions.

What you can do

- **Download your notebooks.** You can download any R notebook from the editor (File → Download) to keep a copy.

- **Run R somewhere else.** Kaggle datasets work with any environment. You can use the Kaggle CLI or download the files directly, then work locally.

Thank you to everyone who has shared R work on Kaggle over the years.

Is there a way to directly download/view notebooks? File -> Download Notebook never loads on my computer, so I have to go to Open in Colab, then download it from there.

I’m really sad about the decision because I truly loved R, and it was a fundamental part of my work in data science

I use R, and new notebooks were created with R as the default language. Now that R is no longer supported, every new notebook I create gives me the following error: "Unsupported languageName: r".

I cannot even switch to Python because the session settings no longer provide an option to select a different language. I suspect this is a bug, and I would appreciate your guidance on how to create new notebooks and change my account's default language to Python.

This is happening to me too…

Hey Kaggle staff here, are you able to create a new notebook with the folllowing link (in the meanwhile): kaggle.com/code/new?languageId=8

or clearing your local storage.

we are currently working on a fix

follow up we deployed a fix to resolve this issue. please let us know if you are still facing any issues

It's been resolved. Thanks!

You should have given us advance notice so we could wrap up our ongoing work! I woke up yesterday only to find that my scripts no longer worked!

Very disappoining . Especially with such short notice.

The end of an era 💔

!Image 3 However, this is most certainly the graph that swayed the Kaggle team: !Image 4

In 2015 one-third of the notebooks published on Kaggle were written in R. In 2025 that had dropped down to just 1.5%, and for 2026 it is currently at less than 0.9%.

As for **"Run R somewhere else"**, now may be a good time to download Positron, _The Data Science IDE_ and work locally.

R Guide was already deleted?

Another fact for more context: R moved from #13 to #8 on the TIOBE index over the last year (Highest Position since 2007) and packages published to CRAN are at an all-time high.

Please share the end date. We need to celebrate the farewell

Hi Jordi, Your notebook isn't visible -- I was coming to borrow it :)

My fault. Sorry! Try now.
